This beautiful girl Sass was born on the 31 of March 2018, Sass had a rough start as she was born with Gastroschisis, this is a birth defect where the babies intestines are outside of their body due to a small hole next to their belly button, Sass had her entire small intestines (bowel) and stomach out. Paediatricians were unable to put her entire bowel in but managed two thirds. The last third of her bowel was kept airtight and moist in a plastic bag attached to her skin with some gauze, this allowed the bowel to stay alive and healthy while being gravity feed back into her body and was closed after 5 days. Sass made her arrival at a sweet 35 weeks and 5 days. She is now 5 weeks old, happy, healthy and doing amazing.
Gastroschisis affects 4 in 10,000 births so it is rare, but also one of the most common, uncommon defects. There are no known causes for gastroschisis but has said to be due to being a young mum. Gastroschisis awareness day is the 30th of July, you can show your support but share around a greenribbon.💚
